John Mitchell, MD

Dr. John Mitchell specializes in Family Medicine and currently serves as the Director of the Office of Mississippi Physician Workforce and an Associate Professor of Family Medicine at UMMC.

Dr. Mitchell served on MSMA’s Board of Trustees – District 3 as well as on the Council on Public Information. He served on the Council on Medical Education and was a member of the MHCARE taskforce. He has also participated as a member of the Annual Session Reference Committee.

Dr. Mitchell is a Past-President of the Northeast Mississippi Medical Society. He has also served as the Past-President of the Mississippi Academy of Family Physicians (MAFP), MAFP Alternate Delegate to American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) Congress of Delegates, and MAFP Delegate to AAFP Congress of Delegates. He served on the AAFP Commission on Medical Education (COE) from 2015-2020. He served on AAFP COE Subcommittee on Graduate Curriculum including one year as Chair. He also served as Past-President of the Mississippi Medical Directors Association.

Dr. Mitchell was the recipient of the MAFP 2021 Humanitarian Award. He has served as the Past-Chairman of the Medicaid Drug Utilization and Review Committee and the Medicaid Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee. He also served as a member of the Pontotoc City School Board of Trustees.

Dr. Mitchell practiced Pharmacy for eight years including hospital, retail, and military. He served in the US Army in the Medical Service Corp (Pharmacy) and the Mississippi Army National Guard (Medical Corp) attaining the rank of Major.

Dr. Mitchell resides in Pontotoc County and is an active member Pontotoc First Baptist Church with his wife Sue Elaine (Brummett) Mitchell. They have two children, James (deceased) and Jeffrey (Ashley), along with four grandchildren.
